Claude Gaveau was born on December 5, 1940 in Neuilly-sur-Marne, France. He comes from a family of artists; his grandfather designed the greenhouses of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.

His artistic training began in 1955 at the School of Applied Arts in Paris (École des Arts Appliqués), where he studied mural painting, stained glass, tapestry, and mosaic for five years. In 1960 he continued his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, focusing on oil painting, pastel, lithography, and gouache.

Gaveau was strongly influenced by artists such as Cézanne, Braque, and Dufy. In 1963 he received a scholarship from the Academy of Antwerp, which enabled him to study Flemish painting in Brussels. His first solo exhibition took place in 1965 at the Galerie Angle Aigu in Paris. In 1968 he was nominated for the "Critique Parrainé" prize.

He is internationally known for his nudes and still lifes. His distinctive style is characterized by a luminous, often described as silky color palette and "symphonic" compositions that find a balance between realism and abstraction.
