Dali was born in 1904 in Figueres, Spain. He is the most famous surrealist painter of our time.
Dali studied art at the Madrid Academy and was greatly influenced by the Dutch masters of the 17th century, as well as by contemporary painters such as Joan Miró and Giorgio de Chirico.

In 1928 Dali visited Paris, where Miró introduced him to the Surrealists. The following year he settled in Paris. His first solo exhibition was held at the Galerie Goemans in 1930, and he was almost immediately recognized as one of the leaders of the surrealist movement. His first exhibition in New York took place in 1933 at the Julien Levy Gallery, and in 1941 the Museum of Modern Art organized a major retrospective of his works. Dali died on January 23, 1989.
