Niels Burwitz was born in 1940 in Swinemünde. He emigrated with his family to South Africa in 1958, where he finished school and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1963. He has lived in Valldemossa, Mallorca since 1976.
Niels Burwitz is one of the important representatives of European post-war art, whose work mediates between abstract imagery and figurative suggestions. Characteristic are multi-layered color spaces, transparencies, and superimpositions that hint at architectural and landscape structures without clearly defining them.
In addition to painting on canvas, he created an extensive body of graphic work including etchings, lithographs, and serigraphs. Many works were created in close collaboration with renowned print workshops and were shown in international exhibitions. The works offered here come from a gallery stock built up over many years and have been carefully preserved.
